The first battle of the Anglo-Boer War occurred
here on 20 October 1899, between a British
force from the camp in Dundee commanded by
Major General Sir William Penn SYMONS and
Boers commanded by General Lucas MEYER, who
occupied Talana and Lennox Hills. After a severe
action the Boers withdrew. On the following day
Boer artillery the Mpau, which had been
commanded by General ERASMUS, forced the Brits
to remove their camp to near Indomeni? and
eventually to withdraw to Ladysmith.
